WWII Mortar Round

Pea Shooter

I have had this round for some time. It was brought back from Guadalcanal. The tale is marked 1942. Every time I look at it, I wonder where it landed. The way it blew out, I was thinking that it must of hit in the mud or water and blew out on one side. You people have more experience than me. What do you think? VaughnIMG_0037.jpgIMG_0036.jpg

Most likely an M57 WP round, due to the way it functioned. Lots of them over there.

I sometimes find blown 4.2 inch mortars where the top half has been peeled back on the lower half from the middle, so the bomb body is essentially all there, just blown out on one side and mangled. Those are probably remains of WP bombs.
