Anyone recommend a good anti virus please?

I'm looking for a good AV program as a step up from the free one i'm using.
Don't mind paying,as long as it's not too much!

Any suggestions please chaps?

Can recommend AVG2012(free) and Avira(also free),you will need to re configure Avira to take it off 'smartsteps' and put it on 'whole computer' to get the best from it,easy to do just go into the configuration section and tick and save the 'whole computer' box.
Avira will nag you for a while to upgrade to a pay for version but soon gives up when you tell it to go away a few times :wink:

Microsoft security essentials, bought all the other expensiive junk in the past which can slow you computer to a standstill like Mcafee etc, had no trouble with Microsoft security essentials all the IT guy's at work recommended it.
 
In my opinion saving money in anti-virus protection is saving in wrong place. Free uploads are not bad but they are usually updated for new viruses rather slow. I have F-Secure Internet Security 2012 and pay for license about 60 Euros annually. Not cheap but it updates automatically almost daily and so far all attacks have failed.
 
I've always used AVG anti virus free version, and never had any problems. I have mine set to manual scan and run it every couple of days, otherwise it slows the computer down when it turns itself on at inconvenient times.
 
I have always used Spybot - Search & Destroy & it is exceptionally good, it updates & immunes itself every month. Has deleated lots of nasty Trojan, Worm's, Password Sniffers, Mal ware etc etc - Completely cleans your system. I do a complete clean every week and not had a problem in 5 years. Hope this helps.

Ive always used Norton anti virus and have had no problems. Price is reasonable if you shop around.
 
I use Norton and with the windows 7 operating system it works great. Haven't had any problems at all with it. It doesn't work quite as well with windows XP, due to holes in the operating system (a microsoft problem)

After two crashes as the result of undetected viruses, I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials over a year ago and have had nothing but good results with it. Just make sure you completely remove any other programs that you have on your machine.

Hum, so you haven't heard of the recent "Flashback Virus":

Currently I use a combination of Trend Micro AV and Spybot - don't rely solely on one - remember "security" is a layered protection approach............. I still find it hilarious that most mainstream AV software treat "spybot" as a Virus!!! (probably because it is donation basis and more reliable than theirs!).

You would be surprise the amount of hacker related traffic that hits any website (mostly from that bunch in Romania).

P.e. When you visit this website, you automaticly get a free virus. Luckely the one i use (F-secure) finds it, and removes it right away. (just 5 minutes ago)

I heard it well, Drew, but in the articles I read, they said it was limited to US and Canada ! Actually, of course !!!

I have had AVG and Microsoft Essentials and they were great up to a point. I can imagine that if you didn't venture beyond your usual trusted web sites then this is all you need.

The problem is that when one has a teenage boy that habitually explores the net for games and movies one gets viruses that Microsoft Essentials can't detect. My IT mate found a Trojan downloader on my computers and a huge heap of Trojans and worms that went undetected by my Microsoft Security Essentials.

I now use the paid version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it gives realtime protection and blocks viruses before they are downloaded. It gives more protection than AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials.
