I show an Armstrong Pillar Fuze for breech-loading ordnance (eg) 40 Pr RBL.
It may be bent but still hard to find and a nice early fuze.
Approved May 1861 and made under contract by Elswick Ordnance Co for sea service RBL and later muzzle-loaded ordnance.
Threaded Moorsom gauge. The top cover is spun-over and has a slot.
The 11 mark on the side may be for Mk11 approved 1866 but were never issued? It may also be a lot number?
These fuzes were recalled Oct 1869 as they were prone to premature explosions and needed a hard blow to fire.
They were superseded by the Pettman GS fuze.
(info from D.Ibbetson "Early British Artillery Fuses").
