One of the czech TV stations aired a full version of an old document about the czechoslovak air force exercise on the highway airfield.
It is a lengthy video but it shows all the preparation needed to convert highway to airfield.
There was also a simulated attack on the airfield as a part of the exercise.
In Germany, the motorways are no longer used as a runway. In Switzerland, this is still standard. There are exercises every year. There are also airfields in the mountain.
Old,Old idea. In 1940 Hitler planned to use the A299 Thanet way as an airfield to ferry on invading troops. The part between Reculver and the A28 Junction is straight for a few miles. Ideal for Ju 52 landings. The RAF thought otherwise.
