BOCN Guess what it is

The tail fin from the 75mm breech loading infantry mortar shell. A 1920's U.S. experimental item.

Ordnance is correct and what he didn't say, is that he has a projectile in his collection. The fin is from the U.S. experimental Breech Loading Mortar. Most of the fin fits into a short brass case. In the photo where the case is next to the fin, you can see that the crimping groove on the case lines up with small cut-outs on the fins, so in that photo the fin is shown at the depth that it would be inserted into the case. The makers did a wonderful job lettering the case, and you can see that they used a 12 gauge shotgun shell (cut short) for the primer. It is rumored that they turned down 75mm artillery projectiles to make the mortar body. The fin appears to be cast aluminum.

Oops, thanks to Hazord for prodding me to post something else. Here's my contribution....PICT0075.jpg

Yodamaster and Hazord are both partially correct. Not a grenade, but a training submunition for the Miles Laser System. They were intended to train soldiers to avoid picking up ordnance off the ground on the battlefield. When disturbed, they emit a flash of light through the translucent body to trigger the sensors on the Miles vest, telling the soldier he just became a casualty.PICT0074.jpg

US-Subs, yes that probably does look familiar. It's been too long to have come from the Bombatorium but certainly from the basement archives in a previous decade. Having done a poor job of declaring a clear winner last time. I'll try one more item..... PICT0077.jpg
