Looks like the spring loaded bore rider safety pin on a mortar fuze. The U.S. number would be an M52 series fuze.

Exactly as you described - the safety pin from a US M52 PD Fuze for the 81mm Mortar HE

It reminds me of a german ww2 rifle grenade but as its not German will stay with the Rifle Grenade as a starter for ten......
