Ok im gonna call this in Pauls absence,,
Siegfreid is correct its a French VB signal grenade
pictures and quote from Pauls website

This grenade would have been launched from a cup discharger using the attached blank. At a high altitude it would eject a burning green star on a parachute for signaling purposes. various flares or signals could be loaded in the tube and would be identified by the tin lid on top.

Paul . Thanks for that . I trust the Service was AOK ? Please have another go [or Spotter] as I haven't got time at the moment to photograph something .
