BOCN Guess what it is

Sorry Allan, Paveways use either Mk. series bombs or BLU-109 penetrators all 500 Lbs. or over. In addition, they are dropped. This item came off a rail. Your time frame is close, as this device was considered undersized for its application, so it was replaced by larger warheads and then the Paveway.

One solution conjured up by the British was to take a pair of air-to-ground rockets, mount them to a Sherman tank, and dub it the Firefly.
The Firefly was literally born in 24 hours and was simply constructed, with potential beyond its crude composition.

I was always under the impression the firefly was the Sherman variant with the "Bigger Gun"? no?

Stray, you are correct. The Sherman Firefly had the 17 Pdr. gun which really worked well on Panther Tanks. Part of this was attributed to the availability of Tungsten for the APDS projectiles.

subs whats your guess?

Ordman, I passed on this one, I've seen parts of Hazord's collection (years ago) and happen to have this same piece - didn't seem fair. John B was getting close though.

Ordman is correct, it is the 250 Lb. SAP warhead from a BULLPUP missile. The BULLPUP was developed after the Korean war and used by both the Air Force and Navy in Vietnam for high value targets like bridges etc. They were produced in the thousands, but it was found that the 250 Lb. warhead was too small to provide enough destruction. This model used a solid fuel motor. There was also a nerve gas warhead (sarin) for this missile. The warhead is easily swapped out as it is connected to the guidance section and motor by interlocking fingers held together by a ring. The missile was guided to its target by the pilot with a joystick, much like a video game. It had 2 smoke generating flares that burned on each side of the main motor, so the pilot could follow its path to make course corrections.

There were two othr models of BULLPUP, a larger one with a 500 Lb. Warhead and one with a nuclear warhead. A longer range liquid fueled motor was also developed.

Ordman, over to you!
