British fuze No223 series

Hello,

I have two fuzes No223 with different shape and materials.

-First picture :No 223 Mk II

The top (percussion device) has exactly the same shape as the top of the US Mk27 or British N251/255.
Body made of brass.



-Second picture : remnants of No 223 AI

The top percussion device is different.
The body is made with brass (time rings) and zinc alloy.


So, does anyone can explain me the difference between marks ?
Diagrams would be very helpful too !

No. 223 - Intro 1948. a combination of the 199s time arrangement, with the 250s percussion unit. For A.A. fire, introduced because of the improved chance of hitting with electronic fire control. 2 marks. Obsolete 1954.

No.223A - Intro 1944. as 223 but with a different head contour. 3 marks. Obsolete 1954.

So if I understand my remnant of 223 AI is a 223A Mark I from WW2 but the other fuze 223 II is a post-war fuze ?

I think my 223 II is dated 1944 (picture)

The date is more than likely a 'typo' - I transcribed the information a long time ago from a document I no longer have.

Hello,

As DJH always says "cut it", I cut the 223A Mk1 but I'm really not the same expert !
It's a shame I don't have a diagram because I noticed the time mechanism is different as the No199 series.
There is no central mechanism for the time system but a flash tube with a shutter (obvious). I assume the time mechanism is on a side like a No221.
The percussion system looks like a No250 mechanism as described in documentation.
