Canister Shot?

I found this is the corner of a junk shop yesterday. The label read 'Boer War Canister Shot'. The diameter is 3" and it is about 11.5" long. The case is a substantial steel sheet with a copper nose. There is a letter 'G' on the brass base plate. I am wondering if the base plate has been shunted forward during firing as perhaps it was originally held by the crimping. It is empty and weighs 2lb 5oz. Does anybody know what it is?

Thank you very much everyone. That settles it. The round I have fits perfectly with those descriptions and the drawings supplied by LEAFLET (even down to the position of the rivets). Thanks, Mark.
