Canister Shot?

I found this is the corner of a junk shop yesterday. The label read 'Boer War Canister Shot'. The diameter is 3" and it is about 11.5" long. The case is a substantial steel sheet with a copper nose. There is a letter 'G' on the brass base plate. I am wondering if the base plate has been shunted forward during firing as perhaps it was originally held by the crimping. It is empty and weighs 2lb 5oz. Does anybody know what it is?

Nice example. When I bought the shell, I was not sure what it was. Now we know it came from the FK96, I can conclude that the label in the shop was wrong. This is because the FK96 was produced after the end of the Boer War.
