cleaning steel cases

Hi again, sorry for the double post on this one but I just saw where I posted it and realized it belongs here instead.

I have a question for the members. What is the preferred method for cleaning up WW2 German steel cases? I know that there are those who say leave them alone, but I have some I would like to restore to prevent further rust from occuring. Please PM me with your ideas or post them for all.
