Here's a rare beasty, a British WW2 Drill No 74 Mk 2 Grenade, aka "Sticky Bomb" made out of one turned piece of wood, weighted with a steel band folded around the body and fixed with woodscrews. Originally painted white and marked on the side : DRILL No 74 ll . this example has certainly seen life, used for throwing practice rather than damage the instuctional ones made of glass or Bakelite. It looks like this one has been used as a mallet at some stage ! Rare than the empty HE ones, I should think that items like these would be thrown on a fire somewhere once they became obsolete.

Hi Paul, I will do my best to measure it up for you asap, if i forget, please remind me ! Tony.

I had forgotten about this one, a carpenter friend of mine said this one was turned from a piece of solid oak. i have seen one or two others over the years, all made from one piece of wood. Because of the wartime constrictions, I'm sure other woods could have been used. Strangely there are even two marks of the drill grenade, Mk1 and Mk2 ! also the steel bands are sometimes nailed on rather than screwed. Tony.

Think i saw one at beltring but looked like the handle was damaged as looked short.According to a doc i have the live ones are 9.5 inches long (with removeable cover attatched) with a 4.5inch head are the practice ones the same

Not sure about dimensions, I don't have mine to hand today, but will find it during the week and get it measured up. I think the actual head is smaller than an HE one, possibly the steel ring is the same size as the glass/bakelite flask.
