Eod - ato

I know what EOD means, but am reading a novel "little brother" by David Mason, 1997. In book is used an abbreviation ATO = Ammunition Technican Officer for EOD operations. I have never heard this. Is it an old title meaning EOD, or just author's imagination?

Tim's Wikipedia entries sound about right. In addition, there was another way for ATs to enter the system and that was via a two year AT apprenticeship at the Army Apprentices College, Chepstow. This gave us a good grounding in basic military skills in addition to trade training. The non-commissioned instructors were all ex apprentices themselves. That avenue closed in the 1980s, I may be wrong but I think the last course passed out from there in 1986. I was there from 1978 to 1980. At one point there were thirteen of us on my course. We ended with eight. Of the three who remained after I left in 1993, all were awarded the Queens Gallantry Medal for IEDD work in Northern Ireland.
