I found this fuze. I suspect it is from an 18-pounder shell. It came from France and was found among a shipment of onions.


Can anyone tell me more about this fuze and whether it is dangerous or not? Could it possibly be from a shrapnel shell? As far as I know, the fuzes on those often remain intact.

Hi there bomber I think it could be one of these bud a No101 or one of the numbered fuzes either side of the No101 here’s a pic of mine bud so you can see what it would of looked like

I’d say it’s harmless but others will say look at all fuzes as dangerous . As you say the bottom damaged and the gains gone so I would give it a clean bud
 
I'll second what ABBOT1989 has said; it's definitely a British 100 number fuze with the gain having gone off. These were mainly used on HE shells (not shrapnel). I've attached a picture of some of mine: a No100, No101, No102 and No103. The No101 I have has an inert FFE gain attached; if you ever come across one that looks like that in a shipment, DO NOT touch it; the gain is very dangerous. With that said, the only dangerous thing that could happen with yours is that you drop it on your foot, give it a clean-up, and put it on your shelf.
