GrZ 14 n/A help

I bought this fuze recently and have two questions about it,
Does anyone know the purpose of the steel cover plate that fitted over the body of the fuze and who were the manufacturers W&W?

All Gr.Z.14 nA had this cover. It was added to prevent mud entering through the flash hole one the side because this mud was blocking the striker and gave a lot of duds. Outstanding example!
