help needed

hi ya guys
i have just taken over being webmaster for the bridport shooting club i belong to as the other guy was being a bit of pain about it so i have kind of updated our old site and gave it a bit of a face lift etc still a lot of his old content on there which is a bit rubbish the question i have is i now own

but he owned the .com version of it but wont give that up just yet as he says he owns it and now he has pulled the site on that completely but i am trying to get mine in the search engines ? our old site used to come up as number one in google i have done the google add me bit but says could take months before its listed but i am unsure how to do the verify bit so i can see when its been seen by google or something like that as it says i either need to do the add a meta tag or upload a html file i did what i thought was correct adding them but it didnt seem to work when i hit the verify button said not found so i guess i must be doing something wrong can anybody give me a few pointers please ? also have a look at the site and give me a few pointer on how to improve it i know its a little basic but that all the officelive program would let you do cant change icons or backgrounds and limited to colours its really crap does anybody know of a good website building program that i can get so i can make one with all the bells and whistles site cheers

Apart from adding the words "sex" and "lesbian" :tongue: into your meta tags I can only suggest you try adding yourself to other search engines the same way that you did with Google. It will take a little while for them to increase your presence on them so don't expect it to increase immediately and remember that the other top ranking sites are probably doing the same thing.
 
Hey Chris, I'm going to be away over the next week but will gladly help out where I can when I get back..

As for google, is it the Analytics tool your are using? Don't bother adding meta tags the best way is to do as you've attempted and create a file. you need to make sure the file is spelt exactly the same as what it instructs as its case sensitive. Make sure you put it in the root folder of your website, so if it instructs you to create something called x132Jhd.txt for example.. put that in your root folder and test if you can access it simply by putting the name onto your website URL, e.g. www.bridportshootingclub.co.uk/x132Jhd.txt - if you don't get a 404 error (Page Not Found) then the verify should work.

Don't worry about google taking months to hit your site, they're actually fairly quick and you should see inclusions in the search within days. Also submit to the other 'BIG' search engines. Live.COM / YAHOO.COM

Meta Tags aren't so important to the search engines, other aspects are much more important, primarily the content on the page.. headings in the page, properly structured links etc..
