This was flared at the mouth, now a bit more straightened and the lacquer finish removed.
Type 90 57 x 121mm case.
As i have found with a lot of Japanese cases the primer was easy to undo, seems they followed the British regs. on applying 'Petmans' to the threads.

If I may ask, what method did you use to reshape the mouth? Looks to be a fine job youv'e done.

Lots of peening and tapping ,using the tapered body of an 81mm practice mortar as a mandrel. Not too bad but a bit rippled up close!.

Hi Bob,

Did you apply a little heat? (OK a lot then?)

I have found in the past that cold working the rims normally ends up with cracks, but heating the rim till it glows a dull red (annealing) followed by working the rim results in a near perfect finish. I have used the same process to re-fit projectiles back into unfired cases (simply invert the projectile with the pointy end first).
(Of course you'll require a good butane hand torch and plenty of space!)

Cheers
