A wet cloth will take off a lot of the surface dirt, but do not try to depress the pins as the springs underneath have usually rotted away and the pins will stay depressed

even a transit cap thrown in!

Looks as though the transit cap has lost it rubber seal , allowing moisture to enter

Or maybe this cap was never fitted correctly?
