This early Moorsom Percussion Naval fuse was approved in 1851 for smooth-bore ordnance.
When fired the shock of discharge shears all the internal wires and allows the hammer to float until the moment of impact when the hammer facing the direction of motion will hurl forwards striking the detonating compound. The flame from the detonation passes through the vent holes into the bursting charge.
Stamped W ^ D on the top . T and 4 spanner holes. 53 and 54 stamped on the chamber plugs. 54 stamped near the base. A nice early fuse.
