New Fuzes......

Darren

Well-Known Member
Today i have recieved a new set of fuzes, all in very nice condition and a great addition to my collection.

Photo 1 - All 4 fuzes
Photo 2 - Sectioned MTSQ M564
Photo 3 - MTSQ M564
Photo 4 - MTSQ XM548
Photo 5 - MT M565

On the 3 complete fuzes they are stamped:

FUZE.MTSQ.M564 1970-WTX-9-53
FUZE.MTSQ.XM548 1962-WTX-1-
FUZE.MT M565 1966-WTX-5-3

I have some info about a couple of these fuzes but cannot find anything on the MTSQ XM548, if anyone has any info on this fuze i would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Darren

Darren,

The 548 would be an older version of the 564 fuze.

You can download the master document here that covers ammo and fuzes, just do a right mouse button on the hyperlink, and hit save target as, and it will download to your computer where you specify:

http://arichens.com/stuff/survival/docs/US%20Military%20Manuals/TM-43-0001-28%20Army%20Data%20Sheets%20-%20Guns,%20Howizers,%20Mortars,%20Rifles,%20Gren%20Launchers%20&%20Arty%20Fuzes.pdf

It is 14 MB, but has all the info you would need. It is free, same as SCRIBD charges for. Once yiou download, go to the table of contents, and pick on the page number, and it will jump to ther sheet for the fuze automatically. The fuzes are near the end of the book.

Thanks for the reference Hazord, great info on not just the fuzes but everything. Just what I was looking for.

Darren,

Glad you liked it. I was surprised when I found it. I punched "M548 Fuze" into google and that site came up about 8 or 10 down the list.

Hazord,
After having a good read through the section on fuzes i now have a better understaning of the M548 fuze, although i found no mention of the XM548, any idea about the X? is it just a variation of the M548?

Cheers,
Darren

Darren,

The U.S. has bounced around with model number designations through the years. Around WWII experiental items were assigned a T number theoretically to mean Test. Later on they phased out the T and started using XM for Experimental Model. Since your version is XM, that would mean that it is an early production before the fuze had been adopted as a standard issue item.

Thanks for confirming that Hazord, that's great.

I remember reading somewhere that the internal clockworks for these fuzes were manufactured by 'Westclox', does anyone know if they manufactured all of the internals for all models of these, all dates etc?

The photo below is of a handful of the timers from these fuzes (M564,M548,M565) although which particular model/models im not sure, all look identical at first glance but one or two of them do differ slightly, this is the reason i ask if different manufactures would have been used.

Thanks,
Darren
