No.247 Fuze Tape Manufacturers

Hi,

I picked up 8 tapes for the 247 fuze in Europe, 2 of which are stamped with makers marks, the second one of which could be “7N” or “NZ” - does anyone have details of who manufactured them please?

Thanks

Peter

There was no requirement for British tape manufacturers to mark their tapes. More likely the stamps might be inspection markings, but if so maybe Canadian rather than British.

For interest, there were three UK manufacturers of "Safety Bolt with Tape" for the No.247 fuze: Walter Grafton and Son Ltd; Arplex (Engineers) Ltd; and Britains Ltd - the latter of lead toy soldiers fame.

Snufkin is right in that few of these tapes seem to be marked.
I can find only one in my own collection of grenades fitted with a 247 fuze, and that on a perfectly standard No 69 1 dated 41 by DLR.
It is unusual in that the lead weight is secured by a staple rather than barring.
I know nothing of the tapes that may have been fitted to the No 854 Mk 1, et seq, Andrews and Swan provide some illustrations but that detail is not included.
Presumably there were previous Marks of tape produced by this manufacturer.
