Pettman Percussion Fuze Land Service No 6 Mk 1.

The Pettman Percussion Fuze No 6 Mk 1 was introduced in October 1861 for Land Service smooth-bore common shells.
The top is stamped W^D ( War Department) and 1.
It has 4 holes and 2 slots for the fuze wrench.

Wow, another amazing example of a rare & early British fuze. Pettman has his name on several fuzes: Land, Sea and General Service, and although I have a good number of pages of c1865 handwritten info on those it is in the second half of the last volume that I am yet to transcribe and research and I am many months away from getting onto that. Attached are two of those pages, one an official 'plate' pasted into the handwritten manuscript, showing your fuze, and the following page, showing the writer's regular handwriting.

Top
