Has anyone of you gents ever done business with michael safferty? I am having trouble understanding his math.

I purchased that DM 11 he had on the auction about a week ago. I used the "currenncy exchanger" that is provided by Special Auctions. The total for the item with S & H came out to be 87GBP, which worked out to $134.97. He is now charging me another $20.00 dollars making the price of the grenade to $160.00 and he cannot explain why the raise up to $160. His e-mails are not making any sense what-so-ever. A few words here and there unevenly spaced and not formally presented to one buyer, which that would be me. Finally, he tells me that he will not take any more questions from me and if I still don't understand then I should go some were else. He'll just put it back on the board and be done with it all.

What should I do?

Mark

Hi Mark, I've bought off Mike several times in the past. I agree his e mails are very short but I have always received the goods as described and for the agreed price with no problems, in my opinion he's a good guy to deal with...................having said that as I'm UK based I've never had any problems with currency conversion.
I don't know how your paying - if its by paypal I believe there is an extra charge for the seller to convert if you are paying in $US - perhaps that is what the extra $20 is for (I'm not an expert on paypal, don't have it myself but that's just what I heard).
Why don't you offer to send Mike the money as cash in sterling? (I'm not recommending or not recommending you do just in case it gets lost in the post but that's what I do sometimes and it always seems to work).
Hope you get it sorted out soon.
Dave.

Hi Mark,

I've been buying a couple times from Mike in the last months, and did not had any problems with him or the goods.
My last purchases (from 21 december and 27 december) have not yet arrived, but I suppose i have to blame the hollidays for that delay, as his other shipments arrived whithin 7 days.
I also paid with paypal (just made the payment in and had paypal convert it), and never paid more than he asked/was bid on the site.

Hello Mark, This is my first posting on BOCN so I hope it comes through ok. I have bought many items from Michael and had them shipped to the U.S. He has always been honest and on sereral occasions has gone to great trouble to get highly valuable items to me in a safe manner. I have always paid with Pay-Pal (until I recently fired them for badgering collectors) and there were never any additional charges or currency conversion problems. Any Item sent by surface will take at least a month and possibly two. Airmail is faster but not as safe. I hope you get this worked out to mutual satisfaction! Pat

Hi,

i too have bought and sold to and from Mike. I have found him an exemplary person with who to deal. However, he dosnt mess with words ever and his emails are always short and to the point and always have been. Also, SA US$/ rate may not actually be the cash rate that Mike requires as there always is a difference. I cannot fault the guy.

dealing with Mike

G'day I have had many deals with Mike and he has always been great to deal with when you say the item and shipping charges were x amount was that the shipping amount for within europe as it will cost extra to ship to the US could there be a misunderstanding about that???

Hi All,I too would heartily recommend Mike Saffery,I've obtained many items from Mike, and have always found him a great guy to deal with.I send cash payments to everyone, which like Dave has said,is a bit iffy, but it certainly avoids any difficulties with conversion and card charges etc.

I've never had any problems and have sent payments in US dollars to the US on numerous occasions. The last such payment went to Don Schlickman of Dubuque IA,another guy who deserves the highest recommendations. The part I needed from Don had arrived and been fitted a week before he received my payment.Airsure priority mail,my ass!!!!!

HELLO I HAVE BOUGHT MAYBE 5 OR 6 TIMES FROM MIKE OVER THE YEARS AND FIND HIM VERY HONEST AND A REAL GENTELMAN TO DO BUSSINESS WITH.I RECENTLY DID BUSSINESS WITH ANOTHER GENTELMAN IN ENGLAND ( IM ALSO AN AMERICAN )I WAS QUOTED A AMOUNT IN POUNDS AND WAITED A FEW DAYS TO PAY AND THE DOLLAR HAD LOST VALUE IN THE WORLD MARKET IN THAT TIME, SO THAT FEW DAYS COST ME AN EXTRA $50.00 ,I PAID AND ONLY A DAY LATER THE DOLLAR HAD GAIN AGAIN SO IT WOULD HAVE COST ME $25.00 LESS.MAYBE THIS IS THE PROBLEM.:tinysmile_shy_t:

Michael

Hi
I've bought some items from Michael and have no complaints. Have had no problems with emails, seems like a nice guy. No problems either with items posted to Norway.

Wishing all a happy new year

I have to jump on board here. I deal with Mike as often as I can and have never had a single complaint. I've never experienced the problem you're having Mark and am quite puzzled. I email him often with questions and always receive prompt responses.

I've also had many transactions with Mike over the years going back about 10 years and never any problem. Like someone mentioned if you use paypal then pay the GBP amount and it automaticly shows what you just spent in USD. Mike always has nice stuff up for sale and never a problem.....Dano

Mark,

I bought a number of items from Mike around 2 years ago, with no problems at all. I was using Paypal at the time.

I have done business with Mike both ways without any problems. In this case it must be kind of misunderstanding in both ends?

Hello
i bought from mike when he was on ebay before he swopped to SA.

Never had a problem, allways seemed ok.

Maybe you just got on his nerves with alot of emails as he does keep em short?
Or is it the long distance causing a problem for him?
i dont know mate.:eek:oh:

Best thing to do is contact him and explain your problem and see if you can patch it up.

regards

Ive known Mike for about 14 years or so and have bought items of him without any problems, its true he will go out of his way to help , i use Pay Pal everytime it works for me .

I've used Mike and found him helpful.

I've never had a problem with him unlike some other people I have dealt with.

I trust him and would recommend him to others.

I bought a couple of grenades from Mike a month or so back and felt I got good value. Yes he is a man of few words, but seems to know his subject and is pretty reliable. He offered me another grenade which I declined as too pricey, but he does not appear to have taken offence.

I do not know of any other trustworthy source for WW1 British grenades in the UK. I don't know why the additional cost has arisen, but if it were me I would be inclined to go the extra mile on this occasion just to keep in with him. Hope that helps.
Add: He was also able to supply me with a detonator assy. for my No. 2 grenade. Where else could you get one of those?!

I haven't bought much from Mike

Lately, but when I have the service has been excellent. He even helps out in other ways with friends of mine when he doesn't really have to. (Thanks)
Phone him and sort it out. It is worth the trouble. And if it's a rare item $20 is nothing.

The thing I see wrong here is that you are wanting to pay in US$, and you need to remember that to exchange money, the bank charges a fee, and $20 is not out of line, if you are paying with paypal, you should pay in pounds sterling, and then paypal makes the exchange.
