Todays Surprize Problem 105mm --- HELP

I have a 105 How. projectile, mainly because I used to fire them. It is a projectile
used to test paint adhesion (I posted this some time ago) . Ever since I have been
looking for a fuze to complete it. I finally got one and guess what, it just sits in the
top of the projectile. Because the projectile body was never filled it has no fuze sleeve !
I never thought of that one ~ Is there anyone out there that can machine a one inch
or so long sleeve to fill the gap out of anything ? Not a postage problem because it's just a bushing.
Help

It needs a booster screwed to the fuze.

I posted the fuze separately in fuzes - it doesn't seem to take a booster ?
Hi
I agree with you that is looks like a M557 or at least it's in that series...M48, M51 etc so in order to fit an HE shell it would need a booster.... from memory a M125A1. Did you fire M2A2 105mm Howitzers ?

Yes I did fire them in the 70s, the issue is the fit and what appears to be a missing fuze well. I'm wondering if I have a mortar version of the fuze ?
It's clearly complete without a booster. There was in the projectiles a removable tetyol supplimentory charge if I recall under the fuze.
That had to be removed to fit a cvt fuze. Those rounds came plugged (if planned for on excersize) when those fuzes were to be used which came in a box of 6.
We didn't fire them often and used mechanical time fuzes moe often and the M557 most of the time. The closest I ever got to the HEAT projectile was on a poster
in the regimantal office.
In the end if I can't resolve the fit issue I'll likely just move the projectile along and keep the fuze for some future deal as I likely paid too much for it as
happens now and again.

Your projectile is not missing anything. The fuze well thread on 105mm M1 is 2in x 12 UNS. your fuze body is 1.7in x14UNS
105mm Fuze M557 is one of a number of improvements in the PD/Delay family. Starting with the M48 (1.7inx14NS thread) where the booster was fitted to the 75mm projectile. Then came the M51 where the booster (M21) was fixed to the fuze rather than projectile, then came the M557.. same top but with an M125 booster.
So your fuze just needs an M21 or M125 booster to fit in your 105mm M1. If you can't find one you could get someone to machine you an adapter with 2inx12 UNS external thread and a 1.7x14NS internal thread

I've never seen a 75mm HE with the booster fitted to the projectile. All the US 75mm projectiles I found in Normandie utilised a booster fitted to the fuze... an M48.....same for 105mm. Always willing to learn though.
