BOCN Guess what it is

at first I thought a zyklon b canister, but your obscure comment leads me to think it is a smoke generator maybe no 8?

Big clue, its just over 3" in diameter and has nothing to do with mortars. Kahu1 would probably know what it is. It's dated 1944. Its British.
