BOCN Guess what it is

Some sort of composite rigid cannon round where the lightweight alloy has corroded away?

SG500 is partially correct. Here are a couple more photos. Its not a rifle grenade and not Japanese.

Smaller than 47mm. It's fairly recent design (past 20-25 years). I don't think anyone uses 47mm stuff much anymore.

40mm? Possibly a Bofors L70 minus the outer sleeve that holds all the shrapnel balls in place?

Dave.

Good guess Dave! You are the winner! I was hoping you would come up with U.S. manufactured. These forgings showed up on the surplus market recently (last year or so). They were never finish machined, and evidently sat around in water and rusted for some time. The rotating band has been hammered on by a 6 segmented die as there are 6 raised lines on the band. All of the U.S. projectiles for the Sgt. York DIVADS (Divisional Air Defense) gun can be identified by the characteristic double crimping groove and the hemispherical base with shoulder. Photos below of the premachined forging next to a complete round. A sleeve of WC fragment balls in a silicone matrix is included. The PFPX on the projectile stands for Frefragmented Proximity Fuzed.

Dave, over to you!
