U means Unterricht
Those U Fuzes are inert. Additionally to them there were "U aufgeschnitten" models which are factory made 1/4 cut sections.

That's interesting. Hopefully, a drawing with this designation will be found later... which would support and anchor that opinion.

If the brass plate is smooth, without a bar, then it's indeed the same as this one.

In response to Alpini , to strenghten thesis about half finished hz 05 fuzes , Bernards Delserts answer.

About the HZ 05 Shrapnell fuze, a friend of mine has also discovered one kind différent from those in my collection ... (it came out from Elsaz, east of France)
I presume that when the German decided to stop production of the HZ 05 * for the Universal shell (explosive mixed with lead bullets) , a large number of those fuzes were half finished in the works, at different steps and the changes made in the drawings could afford to let down some drillings as not worth for schrapnel fuzing. Hence the differences which can be discovered on various fuzes of this kind...
We must understand that there was a lot ot smaller factories making parts of various fuzes and they can have been said sooner or latter that a major change had been made. The final assembling of the fuzes was made in a large factory putting together the pieces and primers, détonators and powder train for timing. That was the job of the Seburg arsenal for instance as the work was much complex.
