BOCN Guess what it is

Greater minds than mine will no doubt expand on this Paul ( I borrowed the picture from a BOCN thread on incendiary destructors). I believe that it was designed to be used as a pull the pin and run device to destroy / damage a downed or abandoned plane. Possibly it had a shaped charge in the base? I am sure that someone has the answers. I just had the picture ( not for long thanks to Bonnex).

It was filled with 3/4 lb of lean Torpex on a minute's delay. The idea was to place it under a fuel tank so that it made a big hole and ignited the fuel and the fuel would spill on the ground under the aircraft and continue to burn thus cooking the airframe. Nothing fancy about the charge.

What is it?

I hope this doesn't prove to be too difficult. Official designation not required just an explanation of what it is please.

It does contain some low explosive but it is not an augmenting charge.

Combustible case, yes. Round, No.

Female spies sounds as though you are on the right track. Expand.

incendiary device which could be concealed in up the erm er ..in a body cavity.. prior to use

Allan,

I think that is close enough. It is a container to hold twelve frames of 35mm microfilm that could be secreted 'about the person' by a courier. The film was wrapped around an incendiary pellet in the container. The combustible container was in two parts that screwed together having loaded the film around the pellet. The pellet was initiated by a percussion cap fired by a spring loaded striker. If the courier was captured and the container discovered, unscrewing of the two halves would cause the striker to be released and the film would be consumed by the burning incendiary pellet and case.

Opening the container by cutting with a saw would allow the film to be retrieved unharmed. The device was designed late in the war by the SOE technical people to meet a specific requirement of the Danish Resistance.

Over to you.

Norman,

Am I barred from this one? If its what I think it is, you were discussing it with Peter.

Too late!

Tom,
It is actually a RS Container which I think stands for Rectal Safety Container but I hesitate to imagine how safe a cocked striker, percussion cap and several grams of incendiary mixture 'up one's bottom' is in reality. It makes the Saturday night Vindaloo sound rather tame.

interesting piece Norman thanks for showing it and the explanation, i was sure i could remember a lady from SOE or MD1 ??? on TV not long ago showing something similar....
anyway heres my go ..its semi relic but im sure plenty of others have this item in better condition
