BOCN Guess what it is

It's not a burster or smoke canister. It is part of a larger assembly. Gas does come out of it.
 
It's not a primer and not for starting a gyro or used in a missile.

It is approximately 3 inches in diameter and around 8 or 9 inches long.

Sorry Allan, not flamethrower related. It was probably last used in the Gulf War.

Blimey that is big enough to launch an aircraft from a ship!
 
Minefield path clearance contraption like a gigantic Bangalore torpedo perhaps?
 
Not associated with minefield clearance. It is a Navy item, but not part of a ship. It has been shown in cross section in a photo here on BOCN and in diagrams as part of an assembly.

Both good guesses, but it's not part of a projector and has nothing to do with chaff. Here is another photo.
